STEVENSVILLE, MD. (August 2014) – PEAKE, a leading integrator of complex, multi-platform solutions, completed a specialty conversion of a Maryland Transportation Authority Police supplied van, built to perform multiple departmental missions.The MTAP van was developed in a strategic partnership between PEAKE and Brekford Corporation. Operations Commander of the MTAP Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit, 1st Sgt. John Irwin initially inquired with Brekford about outfitting an existing empty cargo van for their traffic safety unit. With a partnership in place, Brekford contacted Larry Kahan, PEAKE Director of Specialty Vehicle Sales, to work together to develop a solution.Meeting at Brekford’s facility in Hanover, 1st Sgt. Irwin explained the department’s requirements and concept for a multi-purpose vehicle for roadside inspections to be used as a command post at DWI checkpoints and special events, while keeping a covert appearance.The conversion consisted of insulating and finishing the interior and installing heat and air conditioning that operates from a land power line or while the vehicle is running. A workstation with computer, rolling office chair, file cabinet, drawers and compartments for equipment were installed. Adequate power is provided through an auxiliary battery and onboard inverter to accommodate MTAP’s specialized equipment.Accessible from the rear doors is a custom cabinet system with secure storage for six scales, drawers for special equipment and a heavy-duty pullout tray for traffic cones and containers. Additional space in the van can be used for long measuring devices and other items required to perform the varying tasks of the MD Transportation Authority Police.The MTAP Van is a good example of using existing department resources rather than going through the process of purchasing a new vehicle.
